Bornholm produces a disproportionate amount of Denmark’s best food for an island of 40,000 people. The combination of fertile soil, a microclimate warmer than the rest of Denmark, and a community of producers and chefs who actually know each other has created something unusual: a food culture where quality is the norm rather than the exception.
Here is where we eat when we are not at the hotel. These are genuine recommendations, not paid placements.
Kadeau Bornholm
Kadeau earned its Michelin star cooking with Bornholm’s ingredients in a way that makes the island feel like the centre of the world rather than its periphery. The restaurant sits on the beach south of Åkirsebær, and the tasting menu is built around whatever is growing, swimming, or foraging that week. Book well in advance. This is destination dining — people fly to Bornholm specifically to eat here.
Stammershalle Badehotel
Our neighbours along the coast. Stammershalle’s restaurant serves a set menu that changes daily based on what arrives from the fishermen and farms. The dining room overlooks the sea, and the cooking is serious without being fussy. If you want one memorable dinner on the island, this is a strong choice.
The smokehouses
You cannot write about Bornholm food without mentioning the røgerier. Hasle Røgeri is the largest and most traditional. Gudhjem Røgeri sits right on the harbour and has the best atmosphere. At either one, order the Sol over Gudhjem and a cold øl and sit outside. This is Bornholm’s soul food.
Farm shops and producers
Hallegaard, outside Allinge, grows fruit and makes juices, jams, and cider. Lehnsgaard produces organic cheeses that rival anything from the continent. Svaneke Bryghus brews excellent beer in a building that was once a fire station. These are working producers who happen to sell directly. The quality is the point.
Casual and everyday
Try the dish of the day at Ølstauan in Allinge, get a pizza at Brødre. Have another sild at Nordbornholms Røgeri. Bornholm is small enough that you will discover your own favourites within a day or two. See our full guide to explore Bornholm.
